Penetration: The solvent (water molecules) spontaneously flows into one side of the concentrated solution (water molecules) through a semi permeable membrane (such as peritoneum, reverse osmosis). A semi permeable membrane only allows water molecules to pass through and prevents dissolved solids (salts) from passing through.

Osmotic pressure: During the process of permeation, the concentrated solution dilutes the water flow, and when the water flow is concentrated, the solution generates sufficient pressure to prevent the water from continuing to flow in, resulting in permeation equilibrium. In equilibrium, water flows uniformly through the semi permeable membrane, which is in a dynamic equilibrium state. The pressure at this point is called the osmotic pressure of the solution. Osmotic pressure is a characteristic of a solution that increases with the concentration of the solution.
